How does your media product represent particular social groups?
By using swear words throughout my interview on the double page spread, it overall represents rock artists as informal who have a very relaxed and care-free vibe. It indicates that the artist, Elle Panther, doesn’t care about those who will judge her and speaks her mind without worrying about the consequences. In all of the photos, the artists makeup isn’t neat or perfect, and her eyeliner is thick and chunky, further indicating that she doesn’t care about her looks too much and isn’t trying to become popular for her appearance, but for her music and wanting to share her talent.
I specifically chose a model that has piercings to represent the rock genre as typically rock artists like to express themselves physically and like to produce art on their body. By having piercings, it shows that the individual is strong and decisive, and possibly highlights that she has a potential dark and rough side to her personality. This is further enhanced by three point lighting and side lighting. By using side lighting, it suggests that my artist may have a shady side to her character.
The poses that my model is positioned in represent the rock music genre as strong and fierce, and this is further emphasised by the fact that she isn’t smiling in any of the photos. This represents the music genre as serious as the lyrics of songs always link to a story of someone’s past which is relatable to some. The music that rock musicians create is never funny, therefore my model had to pose in a serious way to emphasise this.
From my target audience research, my target audience expected the main images to be taken in a natural setting associated with the rock genre. Due to rock artists being linked with darkness, I decided to go against 75% of those who ticked ‘Natural setting which is associated with the rock genre’ and I used a studio setting, but with a black back drop. The reason for my actions was so that I could have a clear, bold image (which was still low-key) which would be eye catching to represent my social group as mysterious, grungy to put emphasis on dark lyricism.
