Rock magazine

Front page

On the front cover of the rock magazine that I will be creating, I propose to have a main image in the centre of the magazine, a masthead with our desired name, headlines and strap lines to intrigue the audience, puffs with pugs inside and possibly a pull quote which could stretch across the entire front cover.

The main image will be a mid-shot or medium close up so that the models clothing can clearly indicate that the

music magazine’s genre is rock. Since my target audience research indicated that clothing is a key aspect

of a rock magazine, I would like the majority of the models clothing to be visible on the main image

to make my magazine attractive and attract those who have an underlying interest in rock music.

The font of the masthead will be bold and edgy to support and suit the genre of rock. Since rock is a

dark and mysterious genre, the masthead will be black to fit the grungy vibe, as well as be the largest

piece of text on the magazine so that the audience can clearly recognise the company and make it

memorable.

Headlines will be used to lure in the audience and make them want to buy and read our magazine. For

example, “What the Artic Monkeys thought about their recent tour…” could be used on the magazine

front cover that I will be creating as it highlights that a famous rock band is featured in an issue of the magazine,

and also that there is an exclusive interview with them that is only available by buying our magazine.

The colour scheme of our magazine will be mainly red and black as this is what our target audience said that they’d associate the rock genre with, as well as this I believe both colours suit our genre of music magazine. These colours suit the music genre as black connotes the mysteriousness and grunginess of rock whereas the red symbolises evil, death and hatred which is expressed in rock musicians’ work and songs.

Contents page

On my contents page, I plan to have one main image covering in the majority of the page. This image will be large, eye catching, and link to one of the main stories that feature in the magazine. It will be used to highlight and give a sense to the reader of what will the entire magazine will be like in regards to its contents.

Both headlines and straplines will be used on the contents page, along with corresponding page numbers which will allow the reader to simply locate the pages that suit them, and turn to that page in the magazine. The headlines will be short and catchy, designed to quickly grab the audience’s attention and make them feel intrigued about certain, if not all pages in the magazine. Since the headlines may not indicate what is featured on the particular pages, I will place smaller pieces of text (straplines) under the headlines to give the audience a better insight of what is featured on that page. If there is an interview with a famous rock band or artist, I may use a pull quote as one of the headlines to further attract the reader and make them feel excited about what is to come when turning over a few pages.

Since our colour scheme is mainly black and red, I would like the contents page to follow the same house style so that it fits our genre.

Double page spread

I propose that the double page spread that I will be creating will have: one main image with smaller images, an article or interview, a masthead and a pull quote.

The main image will be covering the majority of the double page spread, designed to lure in the attention of the audience to make them want to read the article or interview which it is associated to. Since it is a rock magazine, the model is likely to be singing or posing in a way in which is related to the rock genre e.g. ‘Hair flicking’, playing the guitar or drums etc. As like the front cover, the main image is likely to be either a mid-shot, medium close up or a long shot so that the artist or bands clothing will be shown, which will support the genre of rock. Since clothing is a main contribution to the identity of rock artists, I would like to incorporate this into my work to catch the attention of my target audience.  I will position smaller images where need be on the double page spread so that the reader has a clearer image of what the article gives information about in case they understand better by looking at images.

The article or interview will be laid out into columns so that the pages look professional and neat, as well as support the codes and conventions of a double page spread. There will not be a huge amount of text, as this sometimes ‘puts off’ the reader from wanting to read the article, therefore I will try to keep the article short, but still include masses of good information and facts.

The masthead will be bold and be in a font style that suits the rock genre. It will be eye catching and edgy to make our audience stop whilst flicking through the magazine and be intrigued and want to read the article.I might place a pull quote under the masthead or place it in-between columns so that it is positioned in a place which is most eye catching to the reader. This way it will ensure that the reader reads the pull quote, and then want to read the rest of the article as they found the pull quote interesting.

Proposal document – Preliminary Task

Front cover:

We have decided to take a medium close-up shot due to our brief requiring this, and as a result of our target audience research and discussions we have decided to have our main image of a sports captain. This connotes an active and healthy school lifestyle that we feel is appropriate for a school magazine as this shows talent and skill.

On our magazine, our colour scheme will be blue, green, white and possibly yellow as these colours connote natural beauty and a relaxed enviroment.

The pug will be located near the model as this is where the audience looks the most therefore would attract their attention automatically, and it will also be a contrasting colour to the background as it would stand out.
